My name is Andrew Calvo and I’m a 25 year old Commercial Real Estate Advisor in New Jersey. I live in Tinton Falls, NJ. This blog is about my passions - primarily hotels, commercial real estate, and development, etc.
Since I have been in High School I’ve had numerous jobs, but the field which has always interested me is Real Estate, Hotel Development and Construction. I consider myself a zealot in that area - I try to absorb as much as I possibly can, take the experiences that I learn, or read about and use them in my life.
My ultimate goal?
To work with the hotel development team at Starwood Capital or Starwood Hotels & Resorts. Both companies are truly ground breaking firms in regards to how actions they take seem to reverberate through the industry and usually are picked up and replicated by the rest of the hotel industry. I want to put my talents and passion toward hotels and hotel development to use to continue to make those companies the best in the business. I believe in the brands that Starwood Hotel has, and I believe in the brands that Starwood Capital is creating - they are all unique and fit their own niche.
Why am I interested in Starwood Capital & Starwood Hotels & Resorts? Both firms were started by Barry Sternlicht, probably one of the biggest influences into how you see the hotel industry today. I would love the opportunity to work under him at Starwood Capital, but I would be just as happy working with Starwood Hotels - as his influence is still able to be seen today.
My resume is available upon request.
I intend for this blog to be about my thoughts and opinions of my passions - hotels, real estate, & style. What makes this blog unique is I will put information that I have found from various sources together into one cohesive article, as well as provide my own opinion.
I hope that you’ll subscribe to the RSS feed and follow along in my journey. Please feel free to leave comments at the bottom of the posts, email me at andrew@alconic-inc.com or contact me via phone at 732-963-2284.
I promise I’ll write back.
Andrew Calvo

Just an FYI that Starwood Capital and Starwood Hotels are two completely seperate companies. Starwood Capital has no involvement in the running of Starwood hotels. Only real link is that they were founded by the same man. They both have their own real estate developement team.

David - Thanks for your comments. I have mentioned in past articles how Mr Sternlicht started both Starwood Hotels & Starwood Capital, Mr Sternlicht is no longer affiliated with Starwood Hotels, and both companies are not affiliated with each other.

Andrew, we just redesigned and relaunched our Starwood Hotels review website called StarwoodLobby.com. (We launched it a few years ago, ironically about two weeks before Starwood created their own “TheLobby.com”.) Anyway, would love to know what you think! - John P.

Andrew…Are you for real? Wow…I’m impressed! Good luck to you… I believe in the Secret too…The intersting thing is that we always get what we ask for but it doesn’t always “look” the way we think it will… Are you sure you haven’t already found your calling? Supposedly there’s millions to be made online…I recently came across 2 guys that were former I.T. guys and they got laid off…so they started a blog that evolved into podcasts and multiple other things…anyway, they are completely engaged in the industry, doing their own thing and living large…
Whatever your deepest desires are…best of luck to you!
Cheers…Sandra

Andrew, This is definitely a great idea…I am currently working on a project to create a lifstyle hotel brand and develop it in my city, so I have been immersed in research the last two years, and have truly found my passion - hospitality/real estate development. Fortunately, my “day job” allows me to travel all over the world (South East Asia, Western Europe, NYC, Miami, LA), and while I’m there, I take time to tour aspirational hotels…My favorite hotel development company is Mandarin Oriental, and I love the one in NYC, Miami and the two in Hong Kong…Anyway, I will definitely make sure I continue to visit your site for more information on the industry. Good luck!

This is a great blog. Do you ever take a look at all the mid to upscale development that seems to be the rage at ski resorts? They’re all looking create or expand on the ‘village’ concept that Intrawest has seemed to have perfected.
March 30, 2008 at 9:25 pm
Stephen - Thanks for the comment. I have not really looked into the development at ski resorts - but you are correct. Almost every ski resort that I know of (local ones in PA, to major ones in Colorado) is doing village type developments.
Its a great idea - offering a town-center type environment on the ski slopes. My only concern is the increasingly mild winters that we are having - if it continues, it will have a extremely detrimental effect on the slopes and the supporting functions of the ski areas.

Andrew- It is great we share the same passion for hotels. I am a real estate manager for a national franchise comapny (wish it were hotels) after working for almost a decade as an Acquisition Manager for McDonalds Restaurants. I live in Cherry Hil and have a condo at Long Beach Island, NJ. I will be at to Freehold ironically this week! You didnt mention in your discussion of the Rt 66 zone in Neptune the new Marriott Courtyard which opened there! Anyways, keep the spirit and you have my email if you want to get in contact.
